U.S. officials visiting South Africa this week to meet African trade ministers will face calls to reauthorise the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which expires in 2025. Apparel companies and industry insiders warn that Africa risks a once-in-a-generation shift away from Chinese manufacturing passing it by, with an estimated 240,000 to 290,000 jobs such as Nasimiyu's under threat. Apparel has been the standout success story of AGOA, which launched in 2000 to help develop African economies and foster democracy. African apparel exports under the programme reached nearly $1.4 billion last year, double the amount pre-AGOA. "We've been struck by how open the opportunity is now for us," South African Trade Minister Ebrahim Patel said last week.

The survey results reveal a bunch of fascinating findings, especially when student loan consumers are compared against the average US adult over 18. The average income for student loan consumers was $65,400, slightly less than the $66,200 for the average US consumer. Student loan consumers are more likely to have purchased something from Nike over the past six months than any other brand. UBS argues the end of the student loan payment moratorium will hit a bunch of brands and retailers like American Eagle Outfitters, Nike, and Gap. As my colleague Ayelet Sheffey has reported, the Biden administration remains confident that the Supreme Court will rule in its favor over the legality of its student debt forgiveness.

A pair of "miner's pants" recovered from an 1857 shipwreck were sold last week for a hefty price tag. This isn't the first time vintage Levi's recently sold for a small fortune: jeans from the 1880s sold for $76K in October. A pair of "miner's pants" recovered from an 1857 shipwreck were sold at an auction for a hefty price tag: $95,000. While the original color of the pants is unknown, the 5-button fly "strongly suggests these were an early manufacture of work pants sold by Levi Strauss," the auction site Holabird wrote. This isn't the first time Levi's jeans sold for a small fortune in recent history.

A pair of Levi's jeans from the 1880s sold for $76,000 at an October 1 auction in New Mexico. The vintage jeans were found in an old mine years ago and are still marked by candle wax. Kyle Haupert, a 23-year-old vintage clothing dealer from San Diego, bought the pants at an auction on October 1. Haupert documented the auction and the pair of prized denims on the Instagram account of his shop, Golden State Vintage. A post shared by Golden State Vintage (@goldenstatevtg)"These speak for themselves," Haupert wrote on the Instagram post featuring the jeans.
